iELD

The Next Gen Driver App for Instinct

I was the Lead UX designer and strategist working in lockstep with compliance product management and initiated team“Triad” bringing together product, engineering and design by facilitating weekly workshops to achieve key decisions in each phase.

This project was Trimble Transportation’s #1 priority.

Glanceability Considerations

Brief Intro

iELD serves semi drivers by helping them remain compliant with their hours of service (HOS).

Instinct ELD (Electronic Logging Device) iELD is one app of 10-20+ apps the driver uses on a daily basis, but the most critical due to federal regulations.

Context -> This lives on Instinct, a platform built by Trimble for drivers. The device mounted on a Samsung S5 within their cab and is used parked and while driving.

Where do we begin?

  • Qual Usability Testing on existing ELD solution

  • Requirements Gathering

  • Heuristic Analysis

  • Interviews with project stakeholders

Before

Our Hypothesis

After

Usability Testing

Personally executed moderated usability testing at two fleet locations, testing with a diverse group of 17 participants that varied in tenure, industry and demographics.

The Results

Key Insights

Interactions

Drivers attempted to scroll on the dashboard, something we wouldn’t have known if we didn’t test— since this wasn’t available to a user in current state.

Content Value

While showing which days require updates or certification was very valuable. Drivers saw value in the cycle overview (list of days), but this historical breakdown of availability is accessed less often than we anticipated.

Wayfinding

The absence of secondary navigation proved to be problematic, as drivers weren’t anticipating data visualizations to be actionable or reveal more content.

Key Takeaways for UI Design

  1. Secondary navigation needs to exist to improve wayfinding, even if that means less content on the app’s landing page. (Since buttons and data points proved to be blindspots anyways)

2. Availability and the log grid are high priority for drivers, especially the ability to quickly certify at the end or beginning of each day.

Informed Iterations

From here, I was able to make new prototypes for usability testing and benchmark against the beta test results.

As the results of this study were socialized across the sector, Product Managers began requesting more usability testing on their most critical projects.
